JANUARY 17, 2011-PRESENT
This new series on SYFY (I hate the new call lettering, it will always be sci-fi) has the feel of Canada. There is something dark and quiet about shows that find its way from Canada into American television. Originally a BBC favorite, it should be an excellent addition to the SYFY network. Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly describes the United Kingdom’s version “like Twilight but with better writing”, according to Wikipedia.
Sam Witwer (Aidan), Meaghan Rath (Sally), Sam Huntington (Josh), and Mark Pellegrino (James Bishop) round out the cast of “Being Human.” Pellegrino and Witwer will bring their experience to the set and put this drama on the favorite list of SYFY shows.
Bishop should dominate as a powerful vampire who holds the key to the future for Aidan. Will Aidan be able to walk away from his maker and leave the life of blood and death behind? If the first episode is any indication will be an ongoing struggle.
Josh is a werewolf that has not been able to control his full moon transformations. He wakes up to find himself lying naked in the woods next a dead deer. He wants to contain his vicious side and with the help of Aidan, he believes the answer is locking himself in a dungeon-style room in the sub basement of the hospital where he works.
Sally is a ghost who died in the house that Aidan and Josh rent out. She is the only character that does not have to live a double life because Sally is unable to leave the house. The future is long and bleak but with Aidan and Josh things can only get crazy within the walls of their newly rented dwelling.
The American version is slow out of the gate. If the writing can crank it up a notch and quicken the pace it will have as much potential as its English counterpart.
